Fresh, authentic fruit

delivered to your door step
INTRODUCTION
Pulpa, a fruit delivery service in Malaysia, emerged from the passion for fresh produce. Founded by seven students from Sunway University, the project aimed to offer customers a convenient way to access a wide variety of fruits delivered to their doorstep. The project timeline spanned six months, from idea inception to a successful website launch.
MY ROLE
As a freelancer, I took on the 'Pulpa' project and managed all aspects, including overseeing two developers. My role as a Project Manager and UX Engineer involved client communication, designing and implementing the user interface and experience, ensuring a seamless and visually appealing website for customers.
PROBLEMS
During the COVID-19 pandemic, university students faced difficulties accessing fresh fruits due to disrupted supply chains and limited availability.
On-campus restrictions prevented delivery drivers from accessing the premises, resulting in user difficulties obtaining supplies from local delivery services such as Grab and Food Panda.
SOLUTIONS
The stakeholders aimed to purchase fresh fruits from suppliers struggling to sell their goods in an unstable market and then sell them to students.
As the stakeholders were university students and had access to on-campus residences, we devised a plan to personally handle the delivery. We stored the products in our house to ensure their availability on demand.
Building Blocks of
Development
Development
Just as building blocks are vital for constructing a solid structure, our tech stacks form the core components that enable us to create robust, scalable, and innovative applications.
Design &
Development Phases
Development Phases
Without adhering to a specific framework, we segmented the project into six phases: research, ideation, design, development, and security testing, all culminating in a successful launch.
To ensure a structured approach, I initiated the project by conducting stakeholder interviews, user research, and market analysis. With sufficient data in hand and a clear vision for ideation, we progressed to the design phase. Following AB testing and client feedback on the finalized prototype, I enlisted the support of two backend developers. Task management was streamlined using Asana, and effective communication was facilitated through Discord. To maintain project organization, I created a Gantt chart and assigned tasks to team members, setting deadlines. Weekly meetings were held with both the team and the client to ensure alignment. As the backend developers worked on APIs like SendGrid and Stripe payment gateways, I focused on finalizing the front-end pages. Finally, the website underwent data integration before being subjected to rigorous security testing.
Visualizing Concepts &
Blueprint

We integrated captivating animal character illustrations, including a fox, a pigeon, and a rabbit, to elevate the user experience. These lovable characters provide a sense of companionship and support throughout the journey.

Takeaways and Lessons
Learned
Learned
The knowledge and experiences gained from actively participating in the development and management of the Pulpa project, offering valuable insights into effective strategies, challenges, and best practices within the industry.
Conducting survey during pandemic :
During the pandemic, the need to adapt to remote research methods became apparent. Initially hesitant to move away from in-person interviews, I stepped out of my comfort zone and conducted online interviews. This involved reaching out to individuals on social platforms and joining relevant online communities for surveys. I discovered that conducting research online is not only cost-effective but also allows for a broader reach and flexibility. Embracing online research methods proved valuable despite the initial challenges.Managing remote team :
Managing a remote team during the Pulpa project was a new experience for me, especially with team members located in different time zones. Initially, organizing and coordinating the team posed difficulties. However, I learned that providing autonomy and flexibility to team members in terms of their working schedule, preferred communication medium, and approachability led to increased efficiency. By setting clear expectations and deadlines, while allowing team members to work on their own terms, we were able to adapt and find a productive rhythm despite the initial hurdles.
